Theatre design, the art and technique of designing and building a space—a theatre—intended primarily for the performance of drama and its allied arts by live performers who are physically present in front of a live audience. This article describes the different forms a theatre can take and the history of those forms. In doing so, it will use two terms—theatre design and theatre architecture—largely interchangeably. Both are intended to describe a discipline that creates and shapes the space known, broadly, as a theatre.
